The Barrister Julius Abure-led Labour Party has issued a firm warning to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the August 16 by-election.
The party said it will seek to nullify the poll if its candidates’ names and logo are missing from the ballot.
In a statement on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, National Publicity Secretary Obiora Ifoh accused the electoral umpire of serving “anti-democratic interests”.
“INEC is gambling with the country’s huge resources on this by-election. We will not take lightly any conduct intended to rubbish our reputation,” Ifoh warned.
Party Cites Supreme Court Ruling
The faction insisted that the Supreme Court ruling of April 4, 2025, settled its leadership dispute.
According to Ifoh, “the ruling affirmed that leadership disputes are an internal party matter”.
The group also referenced its March 27, 2024, convention in Nnewi, where Barrister Julius Abure emerged as party leader.
The party urged INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu to respect the Constitution and the Electoral Act 2022, insisting the law provides remedies for any political party excluded from an election.
Another Faction Alleges Bias
The Senator Nenadi Usman-led faction recently accused INEC of double standards.
It claimed the commission refused to upload its candidates on the portal and failed to recognise her as the authentic interim chairman.
Both factions have now turned their grievances toward the same target — the electoral commission
