The Lagos State Government has issued a stern warning to all licensed e-hailing operators.
They must immediately present all vehicles under their platforms for inspection.
This is to help improve safety, service quality, and compliance in the state’s transport sector.
Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, gave the directive during a stakeholders’ meeting at the Ministry’s headquarters in Alausa, Ikeja. He noted the poor condition of many e-hailing vehicles.
“We have observed, with concern, the deplorable state of some vehicles being used on e-hailing platforms. This has necessitated a comprehensive audit and inspection of all such vehicles. Any vehicle found to be unfit will be disallowed from operating on Lagos roads,” Osiyemi said.
He added that the absence of a centralised database makes it difficult to track offenders and criminal activity in the industry.
“The state government is committed to safeguarding lives and property. We will not tolerate operational lapses that endanger Lagosians,” he warned.
Lagos Moves to Enforce Transport Standards
Osiyemi urged operators to prioritise public safety over profit. He called on them to settle outstanding licensing issues and meet all regulatory demands.
Permanent Secretary, Mr. Olawale Musa, said vehicles not registered with the state will no longer be tolerated.
“All drivers must be duly registered and certified by the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute (LASDRI). Our digital regulatory system relies on updated data, and any operator that fails to comply risks the suspension of their license,” he stated.
He warned residents against booking rides offline, stressing that such actions bypass built-in safety measures in ride-hailing apps.
Operators Respond with Safety Upgrades
Representatives of Uber, Bolt, Lagride, Laurie, Vas Acquico, InDrive, Folti Tech, and EDryv updated the government on new safety features.
These include enhanced driver verification, background checks, in-app panic buttons, and improved onboarding processes.
The government pledged to enforce compliance and sanction defaulters.
