As jubilation continues across Nigeria after D’Tigress lifted their fifth consecutive Women’s Afrobasket trophy in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire on Sunday, Ebonyi State is celebrating their own with pride, Blessing Ejiofor.

Ms Ejiofor played her part in the national team’s historic victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket tournament with strength, skill, and determination.

In a heartfelt tribute, the Governor of Ebonyi State, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, praised her efforts and commitment to excellence.

“I take great pleasure and pride in congratulating our very own Blessing Ejiofor from Ebonyi State,” the Governor wrote.

“You have created another moment of history with your achievement, and we are incredibly proud of you.”

A Role Model for Ebonyi Girls

Ejiofor’s win means more than just a gold medal.

To many young girls in Ebonyi, she is now a symbol of hope and courage.

“For every girlchild from Ebonyi, you are an inspiration, showing that hard work and dedication can lead to great accomplishments,” the Governor added.

Beyond basketball, Ejiofor also runs the Muna Foundation’s Girls Empowerment Camp, which supports young girls in building confidence and life skills.

Governor Nwifuru commended this effort: “You are a true beacon of pride for our people, and we will continue to celebrate your achievements.”

From Ebonyi to Continental Glory

The Nigerian women’s basketball team has dominated the African basketball scene in recent years.

With this latest win, D’Tigress now hold a record-breaking five titles in a row — 2017, 2019, 2021, 2023, and 2025.

Ejiofor’s presence in the squad reminds Nigerians that talent exists in every part of the country, and that young girls can explore any path, including sports, to realise their full potential.
