Peter Obi has accused President Bola Tinubu of plunging Nigeria deeper into poverty, while “overfeeding” citizens with misleading statistics. Obi made the remarks in a statement shared on his X page on Monday, July 28.
Obi, who flew the Labour Party flag during the 2023 presidential election, recalled that Tinubu once mocked him during the campaigns for using statistics to back his economic arguments.
But now, Obi says the tables have turned — and for the worse.
“In November 2022, while campaigning in Delta State, the then APC presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, now the President, berated the other presidential candidate (Peter Obi),” Obi said.
“He was ashamed to call my name, saying ‘Na statistics we go chop? All I want is to put food on the table of Nigerians.’”

Obi argued that despite Tinubu’s bold promises, the result after one year in office is national hunger and economic despair.
“Now two years into his four-year tenure, Nigeria is classified as one of the hungriest nations in the world,” Obi wrote.
“Millions of Nigerians do not know where their next meal will come from.”
The former Anambra State Governor slammed Tinubu’s government for issuing what he called “false statistics” on the economy. He said Nigerians are suffering daily while government figures paint an unrealistic picture of progress.
“President Tinubu is now overfeeding Nigerians with wrong statistics — from wrong unemployment figures, wrong inflation figures, and now GDP debasing,” Obi wrote.
“All to put a positive spin on our deteriorating economic and household conditions.”
His remarks come amid public debates over the Federal Government’s reported efforts to rebase Nigeria’s GDP, a move critics say may not reflect the pain on the streets.
According to a recent World Bank report, food insecurity in Nigeria has worsened, with more than 30% of the population facing moderate to severe hunger.
Obi: Leadership Is Not a Gamble
Peter Obi ended his statement with a sharp rebuke of Tinubu’s approach to governance.
“Governance is not a rock science, it’s not a gamble,” he said.
“Like I have always reiterated, it requires sincerity of purpose, character, competence, capacity and compassion.”
The former governor’s comments have sparked debate online, with supporters saying Obi is speaking the truth, while critics call his remarks partisan.
