Kaduna Rally in Honour of Peter Obi Halted by Police Over Security Risks

The Kaduna State Police Command has stopped a planned rally by supporters of Peter Obi, former Labour Party presidential candidate. The rally was scheduled to honour Obi’s birthday.

The police said they received intelligence that criminal elements planned to hijack the event. Their aim, according to the Command, was to “cause disruption, incite violence, and disturb the prevailing public peace in the state.”

The rally was set for the same day as party primaries for upcoming bye-elections. INEC had already approved the primaries, and political parties had notified the police.

The Command warned that the rally would “overlap and disrupt several areas designated for the conduct of other parties’ primaries, thereby posing a significant risk of tension, clashes, and breakdown of law.”

DSP Mansir Hassan, the Police Public Relations Officer, said all political rallies remain suspended in Kaduna until INEC officially kicks off campaign activities.

“While the Command respects the right of individuals to associate and celebrate their political leaders,” Hassan said, “it is important to emphasise that all forms of political rallies and public gatherings of a political nature remain suspended across the State.”

The police advised Obi’s supporters to suspend the rally and avoid any form of procession. They warned that anyone who defies the directive will face legal consequences.

The Obidient Movement in Kaduna later confirmed the cancellation of the event. They said the decision was made “in the interest of peace” after meetings with the Police Commissioner and DSS Director.
