Nigeria’s men’s table tennis team stormed to victory at the 2025 ITTF Africa West Regional Championships. They beat Ivory Coast 3–0 in the final played on July 17 at Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.
The win marked a sweet comeback. Nigeria lost the title to Togo last year. This time, the players—Matthew Kuti, Taiwo Mati, Muiz Adegoke, Abdulbasit Abdulfatai, and Matthew Fabunmi—were sharp and focused from the start.
“We came prepared this year after the setback in 2024. It’s great to see the hard work pay off,” said Taiwo Mati.
Nigeria sailed through the group and knockout stages. They dominated the final, winning all three sets against Ivory Coast.
Women’s Team Defends Title with Class
The women’s team also delivered. Led by Ajoke Ojomu, with teammates Hope Udoaka, Toyin Alabi, and Favour Oghenetega, Nigeria topped a round-robin final stage against Benin Republic, Ghana, and Guinea.
“Winning on home soil always feels special. We’re proud to represent Nigeria,” said captain Ajoke Ojomu.
Both victories were earned before packed crowds at Teslim Balogun Hall. The tournament drew teams from across West Africa and served as a gateway to the 2025 African Table Tennis Championships in Kigali, Rwanda.
Hosted by the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) and ITTF, the event helped showcase Nigeria’s strength in the sport and its growing fan base.
