Peter Obi Donates ₦15 Million to UNN Dentistry Faculty

Peter Obi has donated ₦15 million to the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). The donation aims to support the faculty’s 2025 accreditation and upgrade its facilities.

The department, which admits only 15 students yearly, had appealed for ₦38 million to expand its infrastructure and increase its intake to 60. Obi responded through student representatives and pledged to help raise ₦100 million in total.

“Fifteen dentists a year for a population of over 60 million people is unacceptable. We must act now to change this narrative,” Obi said during his visit.

A Lifeline for Dental Education in the South-East

UNN’s Dentistry Faculty is the only accredited dental school in Nigeria’s South-East. It faces serious challenges—outdated equipment, limited lab space, and poor clinical training facilities. Without urgent upgrades, it risks losing its license from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.

Obi’s donation came after a letter from the faculty’s re-accreditation committee reached him. He visited the school personally and handed over the cheque to student leaders.

“We spend billions on legislators’ car parks while key institutions like this are left to decay,” he said, criticising misplaced priorities in government spending.

Dr. Chukwuma Ibe, a faculty representative, called the donation a “game-changer” and praised Obi’s leadership.

Obi also promised to rally support from other well-meaning Nigerians to meet the ₦100 million target. His visit follows similar donations to nursing schools in Kogi and flood victims in Maiduguri.

Should more wealthy Nigerians take direct action to support education and healthcare in this way, or is it entirely the responsibility of the government?
