The football world has been thrown into mourning following reports that Diogo Jota, Liverpool forward and Portuguese international, has tragically died in a car accident in Spain. He was 28 years old.

According to several media sources, including reports from Portugal, Jota and his brother, André Silva, were involved in a fatal crash along the A-52 highway in Zamora province, near the municipality of Palacios de Sanabria. The vehicle they were travelling in reportedly caught fire after the crash, resulting in their deaths.

The heartbreaking news comes just two weeks after Jota’s wedding to long-time partner Rute Cardoso, an occasion he celebrated publicly on social media. Jota is survived by his wife and three children.

A statement from the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) confirmed the deaths and expressed deep sorrow:

Far beyond being an exceptional player, with nearly 50 caps for the National Team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all teammates and opponents, someone with a contagious joy and a reference within his own community.

On my behalf, and on behalf of the Portuguese Football Federation, I express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Diogo and André Silva, as well as to Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, the clubs where the players, respectively, performed.

The FPF added that it had requested UEFA to observe a minute’s silence before Portugal’s Women’s European Championship match against Spain this Thursday in honour of the deceased players.

Jota made 431 professional appearances for both club and country, scoring 142 goals, and was instrumental in Liverpool’s recent Champions League triumph. His brother, André, played for FC Penafiel in Portugal’s second division.
