Presidency Denies Resignation of SGF, George Akume

The Presidency has dismissed rumours that Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, has resigned from office.

A statement on Saturday night from presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga insisted that Akume remains SGF and has not been appointed to lead the All Progressives Congress (APC) as National Chairman.

“There has been no change in the status of the SGF,” Onanuga said.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, currently in Saint Lucia, has not made any new appointments. The information circulating about Akume’s replacement is untrue.”

Ganduje Steps Down Amid Party Tensions

The confusion followed the resignation of former Kano State governor Abdullahi Ganduje from his role as APC National Chairman on Friday, June 27.

His decision came amid internal pressure, despite an official explanation that he stepped down to attend to “urgent and important personal matters.”

Party insiders believe the move was due to rising resistance, particularly from leaders who viewed his appointment as a breach of APC’s zoning structure.

Ganduje, from the North-West, had replaced Abdullahi Adamu from the North-Central zone in August 2023.

Dalori Takes Over as Acting Chairman

Following Ganduje’s resignation, the APC Deputy National Chairman (North), Ali Bukar Dalori, was asked to assume the position in acting capacity.

Dalori hails from the North-East, a shift that observers say may rebalance internal zoning tensions in the party.

A meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) is expected soon to officially fill the vacancy.

The APC has not yet fixed a date for the NEC meeting.

No New SGF Appointment

Despite the leadership change at the APC, the Presidency has made it clear that the role of SGF remains occupied.

George Akume, a former governor of Benue State, continues to serve as the key figure coordinating the administration’s intergovernmental affairs.

The Presidency’s swift denial appears to be aimed at stopping further political speculation during President Tinubu’s ongoing trip abroad.

Akume’s supporters welcomed the clarification as a reaffirmation of his relevance in Tinubu’s cabinet.
