Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, called on Nigerians to unite against the ruling APC. He said the government had “failed” Nigerians.
Obi spoke at the public launch of Obi, the Political Change Agent, in Abuja. The event drew politicians and youth activists.
Obi said Nigerians are suffering from hunger, insecurity and rising prices two years into the APC government. He said poverty has surged, the naira has weakened, and unemployment remains high. “People are dying every day in this country,” he warned. He added that government focus on expensive projects neglected basic needs.
Obi said, “We are building celebration venues, decorating streets, throwing parties.”
He contrasted this with hospitals that leave women dying. He noted a shocking rate: a woman dies every seven minutes giving birth. Obi argued that public funds must save lives, not decorate offices.
He painted a stark picture of Nigeria today. He said many families lack basic healthcare and food. Some Nigerians now live as refugees in neighbouring countries. He added children sleep hungry and cold when they should sleep in schools. “Nigerians are refugees in Chad. Nigerians are refugees in Cameroon.” He stressed this was not war, but government neglect.
Labour Party Plans Strategic 2027 Campaign
Obi outlined a sharper plan for 2027 saying that candidate selection must focus on service and integrity. He said, “Now, we must focus on getting the right people into the National Assembly, the House of Representatives.”
He stressed voting must be meaningful. Obi warned, “Even INEC will either make the votes count or they will be counted.” He urged voters to ensure every vote is tallied and validated.
The former governor vowed that the Obidient Movement would be more vigilant in 2027. He said the campaign will target every polling unit and also promised no room for corruption or opportunism. He said, “Don’t tell us you’re coming again; we will be everywhere this time.”
Labour Party Leaders Call for Mass Civic Participation
Labour Party caretaker chair Sen. Nenadi Usman urged Nigerians to take active political roles. She said the book on Obi offers lessons on civic courage and responsibility and described him as a voice against government excess. She said the book charts Nigeria’s democratic rebirth from 1999 to 2023.
Keynote speaker Prof. Sam Amadi added that Nigeria needs a “ballot box revolution.” He noted that poverty, unemployment, and inequality got worse under the current rule. He warned that failure to act risks chaos and that democracy needed to be rescued through elections, not violence.
Obi’s message was urgent: Nigerians must unite, hold government accountable, and vote wisely. He said the APC must be removed, and replacements should be committed to national revival. Obi urged patience, sacrifice, and sustained activism for Nigeria’s future.
