People of the Agatu Local Government Area in Benue State are angry and frustrated. They are protesting the arrest and detention of two community leaders by the Nigerian military. This is happening even as deadly attacks by armed Fulani herdsmen continue in their communities.

The latest round of violence has left several villages in shock. Many homes have been burned, and dozens of lives have been lost. People are scared, and many have fled their homes to avoid further attacks.

The protesters say the government has failed to protect their lives and properties. They are also demanding to know why those speaking up for the victims are now behind bars.

Community Cries Out Over Unjust Arrests

On Wednesday, a group of concerned residents gathered to protest. Their spokesperson, Leonard Apia, explained that two local leaders were arrested in the middle of the night on April 28, 2025. They were taken without any official explanation or legal process.

“Those arrested are Mr Abu Idakwo, arrested from Oleginaigwu community, and Mr Echoda Ajene, the Youth leader of Ogbangede community,” Apia said. He accused security agents of targeting innocent citizens instead of protecting them from attackers.

According to him, no one knows exactly what these men did wrong. Family members and neighbours searched police stations in Obagaji, the DSS office, and the nearby Air Force Base in Agatu. No one could tell them where the arrested men were being held.

“It took about four days for us to know that the persons arrested are detained in the military facility at 72 Battalion, Makurdi,” Apia added.

Questions and Demands from the People of Agatu

The people of Agatu allege that the same military that should defend them is now detaining their leaders without any legal process. The residents claim that their communities are under constant attack by Fulani herdsmen, yet no attackers have been arrested.

“Our people are killed in dozens almost on daily basis without security agencies arresting any of the assailants, but you see our people who have been the victims of this failed state are hounded and arrested for only complaining against the attacks,” Apia stated.

The detained men have not been taken to court. They have also been denied visits from their families or access to lawyers. The people see this as a violation of their human rights.

Now, the community is demanding the immediate release of the detained leaders. They want the government to protect their lives and bring the attackers to justice. The residents are also asking many questions that remain unanswered.

“Our questions are: who ordered their arrest? What are their offences? Which of the security agencies effected their arrest? Where are they detained till now? Why is there silence from the Agatu LG council?” Apia asked.

The residents say they’re tired of living in fear. They want peace, justice, and protection for their families.
