Amaechi Still Bitter Over APC Primary Defeat — Presidency

The presidency has said former Minister of Transport, Chibike Amaechi, is still bitter about losing the 2023 APC presidential ticket.

Dada Olusegun, Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Social Media, made this known on Sunday. He responded to recent remarks by Amaechi during his 60th birthday event.

Olusegun accused Amaechi of making false claims about fuel subsidy removal, exchange rate reforms, and other government policies. He also accused him of working with opposition politicians.

“Rotimi Amaechi contested for the APC presidential ticket… Unfortunately, he came a distant second behind President Bola Tinubu,” Olusegun said. “More than two years after his primary election loss, it appears Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has not gotten over the legitimate pain of defeat.”

Presidency Says Amaechi Should Know Better

According to Olusegun, Amaechi’s comments show he is ignoring facts despite being a former Federal Executive Council member.

He said the former minister knows the real situation of Nigeria’s finances during his time in office. Olusegun insisted that Amaechi witnessed the effects of fuel subsidies and the damage they caused.

“This is a very egregious take by Amaechi, who for almost eight years was privy to proceedings of the Federal Executive Council as Minister,” Olusegun wrote.

“NNPCL was not remitting any revenue into the federation account. Worse still, the FG had to sell Nigeria’s crude oil in advance to keep funding fuel subsidies and to meet basic government expenditures such as payment of salaries.”

Olusegun said the subsidy policy under President Tinubu was meant to save Nigeria from financial collapse.

He explained that without the subsidy removal, the country would have continued borrowing just to fund petrol consumption.

Fuel Subsidy Removal Meant to Save Nigeria

Olusegun added that the decision to remove subsidies has already helped Nigeria. According to him, it has freed up funds for development projects across federal, state, and local governments.

“What the subsidy removal did was to remove the burden of looking for funds to subsidise petrol from the shoulders of the federal government,” he wrote.
He added that the change is bringing results.

He said Nigeria can now pay its debts and attract confidence in the foreign exchange market.

According to him, President Tinubu’s bold policies are gradually stabilising the economy.
