Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has declared Monday, June 2, 2025, as a public holiday. This is in honour of the 22 Kano indigenes who died in a tragic road accident while returning from the National Sports Festival in Ogun State.
The governor said the holiday is meant for people to mourn and pray for the victims and their families.
The accident happened on Saturday, May 31, as the contingent was travelling along the Kano–Zaria expressway. The bus reportedly fell off a bridge just a few kilometres away from their destination.
The deceased were part of the state’s delegation to the festival. The group included athletes, coaches, and officials representing Kano State in different sports.
Governor Speaks from Saudi Arabia, Offers Condolences
Governor Yusuf, currently on pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia for the 2025 Hajj, expressed deep sorrow over the loss.
“It is with a deeply saddened heart that I received the tragic news of the unfortunate incident which claimed the lives of 22 innocent citizens and left several others injured.”
“On behalf of the government and the good people of Kano State, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. We mourn with you and share in your grief,” he said.
He described the accident as a dark moment for the state and asked the people of Kano to remain calm and united.
The governor promised that the government would provide all needed support to the families of the victims and those who were injured.
State Urges Prayers and Support for the Victims’ Families
According to the statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, the government directed that the public holiday on Monday be observed across the state.
“While His Excellency is away in Saudi Arabia for the 2025 Hajj Operation, he directed that Monday, 2nd June 2025, be declared as a public holiday for the good people of Kano to pray and sympathise with the families of the victims.”
The statement also called on Imams and Muslims both in Kano and across Nigeria to remember the deceased in their prayers.
“The state also calls on the Imams and all Muslims within and outside Kano to pray for the departed souls and their respective families to bear the loss.”
Emergency services are still attending to the survivors who are receiving treatment in different hospitals.
Governor Yusuf said investigations would be carried out to find out the cause of the accident and prevent future occurrences.
