The Anambra State Government has warned masquerade groups causing trouble during festivals across the state.
The government said it had received several complaints from residents about attacks, harassment, and extortion by some masquerade groups and their followers.
In a recent statement, the Commissioner for Culture, Tourism and Entertainment, Don Onyenji, said the government supports Igbo culture but will not accept lawlessness.
“We support our people’s rich traditions, but not when they threaten peace and safety,” the Commissioner said.
Residents Complain of Assault, Fear, and Panic
People across the state reported being beaten, harassed, or robbed during masquerade events.
Victims include ordinary citizens, drivers, and Keke NAPEP operators. Many have complained of being stopped, forced to pay money, or attacked for refusing.
Some also said they now avoid certain roads or stay indoors whenever festivals take place.
“These actions are illegal. They go against the laws of Anambra,” the government warned.
Many residents also say these violent acts create fear and panic in peaceful communities.
The government has reminded everyone that no cultural event should disturb the lives of others or break the law.
Town Leaders Told to Take Immediate Action
The government directed Traditional Rulers and Presidents General of Town Unions to control masquerade groups in their areas.
They must ensure these groups respect the rights of others and obey the law during any public celebration.
“Traditional rulers and town leaders must step in now. We must stop this growing threat to our peaceful society,” the statement added.
Masquerade groups have long played a part in Igbo traditions. But the government says the new trend of violence and lawlessness must stop immediately.
Cultural celebrations should unite people and promote respect—not cause pain or fear.
Anambra is known for its lively and colorful festivals. But the state says it will not allow anyone to misuse culture to harm others.
Security agencies may soon begin arresting offenders if the violent acts continue.
