Oyo State is set to host the grand coronation of the 46th Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, on Saturday, April 5, 2025.
The historic event, expected to draw dignitaries from across Nigeria and beyond, has prompted the state government to implement strict security measures.
Security operatives have been deployed throughout Oyo town, ensuring the safety of the monarch and attendees. Police vans and other security vehicles are stationed at key locations, including Owoade, Jabata, Akesan, Isale Oyo, Eleekara, and the School of Survey.
A senior police officer confirmed that additional personnel had been assigned to manage the expected large crowds. “The police, in collaboration with other security agencies, are fully prepared to maintain law and order and ensure a trouble-free event,” the officer said.
Oba Owoade officially received the staff and instrument of office on January 13, 2025, and successfully completed the traditional 21-day Oro Ipebi rites on March 29, paving the way for his coronation.
High-Profile Guests and Packed Hotels
The coronation venue, Oliveth Baptist High School, will host prominent figures, including Governor Seyi Makinde and notable Nigerian dignitaries.
Additional celebrations will take place at Ladigbolu Grammar School, Durbar Stadium, the Oba Lamidi Adeyemi Mini Stadium, and the Palace of the Alaafin of Oyo.
Foreign dignitaries, including the former Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, and ambassadors from four countries, will attend. More than 200 Oyo indigenes based in Canada, along with traditional rulers, diplomats, and government officials, are expected to be present.
Local hotels report full bookings ahead of the event. A hotel manager noted, “We have upgraded our facilities to ensure our guests have a memorable stay. Security agencies have assured us of adequate protection.”
As part of the city’s preparations, Akesan market and nearby trading hubs will be temporarily closed to allow local traders to participate in the celebration.
