The Federal Government has commissioned a smart police station in Katampe, Abuja. The goal is to improve internal security and boost community policing in Nigeria’s capital city.

The new station, built by the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF), is equipped with modern technology. It was officially handed over to the Nigeria Police Force on Wednesday, May 14.

The station is part of a broader plan to deploy advanced security infrastructure across the country. Similar smart police stations will soon open in Kogi, Enugu, and other states.

Improved Facilities and Technology

The Katampe smart station features CCTV cameras, solar power, an overhead water system, and a perimeter fence. It runs on a 30-kilowatt off-grid solar energy system built with support from the Rural Electrification Agency.

During the handover event, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Police Affairs, Dr. Anuma Nla, represented Minister Ibrahim Gaidam. He described the project as a sign of serious government commitment to safer communities.

“It embodies our collective resolve to entrench law and order, improve community-police relations, and ensure that every citizen can live without fear,” said Dr. Nla.
“It stands as a beacon of hope, a pledge of protection, and a commitment to service delivery at the grassroots.”

He asked police officers deployed to the new station to be professional, uphold human rights, and serve with transparency.
“This police station is a clear demonstration of our resolve to ensure a safer and more secure Nigeria,” he said.

More Housing, Better Morale

The Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, Mohammed Sheidu, described the station as a modern security hub. “This is not just another police station,” Sheidu said.
“It is a secure, efficient, and community-oriented policing hub built to meet the evolving standards of law enforcement in today’s Nigeria.”

He listed the station’s smart features and announced a six-unit residential project for junior police officers.

“No officer should have to face the burden of duty while contending with inadequate living conditions,” he said. “This is a tangible step towards boosting morale and ensuring our personnel, especially at the front lines, have the stability to perform their roles with excellence.”

Sheidu urged officers to take good care of the station and use it responsibly. He said public funds must always be used transparently and with accountability.
