Supporters of suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara gathered across the state on Easter Sunday, calling for his return to office.

The events were held by the Simplified Movement, a political group backing the governor. Members met in all 23 local government areas for singing, dancing, and prayer.

They believe President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will intervene and help resolve the political crisis in Rivers State.

During the praise session in Ahoada, one of the group’s leaders, Stephen Ihua-Maduenyi, linked their hope to the meaning of Easter.

“As you well know, today is Easter Sunday. Our Lord, our Father, Jesus Christ, is risen,” he said.

“We are here to celebrate that and to call on Him to celebrate us, just as He celebrated mankind—that He may make it possible for our Governor to return. We believe He can do it for us. Only He can. It is not by our power, but by His. That is why we are gathered.”

Governor Fubara has been at the centre of a tense political standoff with the state’s lawmakers, leading to the imposition of emergency rule and suspension of all elected state officials.

At the praise session, former Education Commissioner Ovy Chukwuma told Channels Television that they remain firm in their support for Fubara.

“They tried to bury us in Rivers State, but we are here to tell the world that we are alive. That Rivers State is alive. That Rivers State stands with Governor Siminalayi Fubara,” he said.

Trust in Tinubu’s Intervention

Supporters of the movement say they still trust President Tinubu to act fairly and end the emergency rule.

They believe he will ensure that peace and stability return to Rivers. They also hope the power struggle will end and Fubara will be fully reinstated as governor.

Some political observers say the crisis in Rivers is a test of Tinubu’s democratic credentials which could affect his rating in the lead up of re-election in 2027.
