George R.R. Martin, the author of Game of Thrones, recently had an emotional moment when he met real-life dire wolves—animals revived through cutting-edge genetic technology.

The meeting happened in February, when Ben Lamm, CEO and co-founder of Colossal Biosciences, invited Martin to see the three genetically engineered pups—Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi.

Colossal Biosciences, a Dallas-based biotech company, specializes in de-extinction—the process of reviving extinct species using advanced gene-editing techniques.

The two newly born baby Dire Wolves, brought back from extinction by genetic engineering, seated on the Iron Throne. 🐺

Scientists extracted DNA from a 13,000-year-old dire wolf tooth and a 72,000-year-old gray wolf skull, creating a hybrid that mirrors the physical traits of the legendary dire wolf.

These wolves are housed in a high-security nature preserve, monitored by the American Humane Society and U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Martin’s Emotional Reaction

Witnessing the revived dire wolves brought Martin to tears, according to sources. The author later wrote about their historical significance in shaping North America’s ecosystem.

“Dire wolves were once thought to be creatures of legend, but now science has brought them back,” Martin noted.

The success of the dire wolf project has drawn global fascination, but it also raises concerns. Some compare it to Jurassic Park, questioning the unpredictable consequences of reviving extinct species.

For now, the wolves appear healthy and thriving, offering a glimpse into a world where science and fantasy intertwine.
