Thousands of people gathered in Washington, D.C., and across the U.S. on Saturday to protest against President Donald Trump and billionaire ally Elon Musk‘s efforts to overhaul the government and expand presidential authority.
Over 1,200 demonstrations were planned across the country. At least 20,000 people attended the rally at the National Mall.
Protesters carried signs and flags, including Ukrainian flags and “Free Palestine” signs, while Democrats from the U.S. House of Representatives took to the podiums to criticize Trump’s policies.
Some protesters are worried about Trump’s economic policies, including his use of tariffs, which they believe could harm farmers and cost people their jobs.
Wayne Hoffman, a 73-year-old retired money manager from New Jersey, said he is concerned about the impact of Trump’s policies on the economy.
“It’s going to cost the farmers in the red states. It’s going to cost people their jobs – certainly their 401Ks. People have lost tens of thousands of dollars,” he said.
The protests were not limited to Washington, D.C. Demonstrations were held in all 50 states, as well as in Canada and Mexico.
In West Palm Beach, Florida, over 400 protesters gathered near Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s resort, to voice their opposition to his policies. Drivers honked their horns in support as they passed by the protesters. One sign read, “Markets tank, Trump golfs.”
Concerns About Social Security and Medicaid
Some protesters were concerned about the potential impact of Trump’s policies on Social Security and Medicaid. Linda Falcao, a 65-year-old woman who had been paying into the Social Security fund since age 16, fear about the future of the program.
“I’m terrified, I’m angry, I’m pissed, I’m bewildered this could happen to the United States,” she said. “I do love America, and I’m heartbroken. I need my money, and I want my money and my benefits!”
The crowd chanted, “It’s our money!”
Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency team, led by Elon Musk, has eliminated over 200,000 jobs from the 2.3 million federal workforce. The famous Internal Revenue Service (IRS) began laying off over 20,000 workers on Friday, as much as 25% of its ranks.
Trump’s Agenda Faces Opposition
Trump’s agenda is being opposed through lawsuits and protests, with critics arguing that he is overstepping his constitutional authority. His supporters, however, applaud his efforts to disrupt entrenched liberal interests.
White House assistant press secretary Liz Huston disputed the protesters’ charge that Trump aimed to cut Social Security and Medicaid.
President Trump’s position is clear: he will always protect Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid for eligible beneficiaries,” she said. “Meanwhile, the Democrats’ stance is giving Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare benefits to illegal aliens, which will bankrupt these programs and crush American seniors.”
Protests Continue to Grow
The protests are likely to continue, with many Americans strongly opposed to the direction of America under Trump 2.0.
Hours before the protests were due to kick off, hundreds of anti-Trump Americans living in Europe gathered in Berlin, Frankfurt, Paris, and London. They protested Trump’s sweeping makeover of U.S. foreign and domestic policies.
The protests are a clear indication that many Americans are unhappy with Trump’s policies. We may likely see more and more protests in the coming weeks and months.
