Six Dead, 14 Cars Burnt in Nyanya Bridge, Abuja Accident

Police in Nigeria’s capital city of Abuja has confirmed the fatal accident near Nyanya Bridge on Wednesday evening, March 19, at about 6:58 PM. Six people lost their lives, and 14 cars were destroyed in the fiery crash.

According to SP Josephine Adeh, the FCT Police spokesperson, a distress call was received by Karu Division reporting the accident. “A trailer, heavily loaded with cement and coming from AYA, lost control and crashed into stationary vehicles trapped in traffic near Nyanya Bridge,” she said.

The collision triggered a massive explosion that engulfed 14 cars in flames. “Panic and chaos followed as bystanders and motorists scrambled for safety,” Adeh stated.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene, facing thick smoke and intense heat to rescue those trapped.

Six victims were pulled from the wreckage and rushed to the hospital,” Adeh continued. “Tragically, they were confirmed dead by medical personnel. Their remains have been deposited at Karu General Hospital Morgue.”

Police operatives and fire service personnel, supported by other security agencies and brave individuals, managed to contain the fire. The scene was eventually cleared, and normal traffic resumed.

FCT Command Urges Caution on Roads

The FCT Police Command expressed its deep condolences to the victims’ families and pledged a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the accident.

Adeh urged drivers to be cautious and obey speed limits, especially in high-traffic areas. “Safe driving habits can prevent tragedies like this and save lives,” she said.

Residents were also encouraged to remain alert and report emergencies or suspicious activities using the FCT Command’s emergency numbers: 08032003913, 08028940883, 07057337653. For complaints, the public can contact the Complaint Response Unit at 08107314192.
