In a recent attack, Lakurawa militants targeted Birnin Dede village in Kebbi State’s Arewa Local Government Area, resulting in at least 13 fatalities. The assailants also set fire to at least seven nearby villages, causing widespread destruction.
This violent incident appears to be a retaliation for the recent killing of Maigemu, a prominent Lakurawa leader, by combined security forces in Kebbi State.
Sani Aliyu, Chairman of Arewa Local Government, confirmed the attack, stating, “The Lakurawa terrorists shot dead 11 people and injured two others… (and) set fire to the seven villages.”
He added that the Lakurawa attackers spared only one village which was guarded by the military.
The Lakurawa Terror Group
Lakurawa is an armed group reportedly affiliated with extremist organizations operating in the Sahel region, particularly in Mali and Niger. They have begun making inroads into Northern Nigeria, specifically in Sokoto and Kebbi states.
Initially founded as a self-defense group to fight criminals in the Nigerian bandit conflict, the group eventually became increasingly radical, oppressive, and opposed to regular state agencies.
In response to the attack, security forces have intensified efforts to track down the assailants and restore peace in the affected areas. The Kebbi State Police Command has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.
The recent attacks have left many residents displaced, with their homes and properties destroyed. Local communities are urging the government to provide adequate security and support to prevent further incidents.
