Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has handed over brand-new Toyota Hilux vehicles to the 18 newly inaugurated local government chairmen. The presentation ceremony took place on Monday at the Government House in Akure, where top government officials, traditional leaders, and political stakeholders gathered for the occasion.
Aiyedatiwa reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening governance at the grassroots level, ensuring that local government officials have the necessary resources to serve the people effectively.
“These vehicles are not for luxury but to aid you in reaching every corner of your local government to serve the people better,” he said. “Local government administration is the closest to the people, and your success will directly impact the progress of our state.”
The governor said it was important for government officials to demonstrate transparency, accountability, and responsiveness in local governance. He urged the chairmen to use the vehicles for official purposes only and to always prioritize the welfare of the citizens in their decision-making.
Strengthening Local Governance
Mr Aiyedatiwa acknowledged the crucial role local governments play in delivering essential services such as healthcare, education, and road maintenance. He noted that without proper mobility and logistical support, the effectiveness of local leaders could be greatly hindered.
“I personally believe in local government autonomy and will always support it,” Aiyedatiwa added. “These vehicles will enable you to visit rural areas, monitor development projects, and respond quickly to the needs of your people.“

The governor’s gesture is in line with his stated vision of making governance more accessible and efficient across Ondo State. He also hinted that more infrastructural and developmental support would be provided to local governments in the coming months.
Appreciation from Local Government Leaders
The chairman of the Ondo State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Gbenga Fasua, expressed gratitude on behalf of the 18 chairmen. Fasua, who also serves as the chairman of Akure South Local Government, promised that the vehicles would be used for official duties to improve governance at the grassroots level.
“We appreciate the governor for this great initiative. We will ensure that these vehicles are put to good use for the benefit of our people,” Fasua said.
The event was attended by several top government officials, including Deputy Governor Olayide Adelami, Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly Olamide Oladiji, and Special Adviser to the Governor on Union Matters and Special Duties, Bola Taiwo.
