Former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Prof. Kingsley Moghalu has stated that it is high time Africa stopped depending on the United States.
He insisted that US President Donald Trump is precisely what the continent needs, adding that Africa must chart its own course.
US Freezes Foreign Aid
According to a classified US government memo, the US State Department has immediately frozen nearly all foreign assistance worldwide. The order threatens billions of dollars of funding from the State Department and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) for programs worldwide, especially in Africa, where multiple programs targeting improved health, military aid, and democracy are ongoing. Only Israel and Egypt were exempted.
The ban, which will be in place for 90 days, will help the US re-evaluate how the programs align with its interests.
Speaking via his X account on Sunday, Moghalu opined that being “sidelined” by Trump is what the continent needs. He wrote, “Being sidelined by Trump is exactly what Africa needs. We need to wake up and stop moaning about what Trump ‘means for Africa’. Africa must take its destiny into its own hands and chart its course. Just tired of the ‘what Trump means for Africa’ discourse of dependency.”
Moghalu’s Economic Philosophy
Prof. Moghalu is a Nigerian political economist and the President of the African School of Governance (ASG), a pan-African graduate school focused on public policy and governance based in Kigali, Rwanda.
In 2019, he unsuccessfully ran for president under the fringe party, the Young Peoples Party (YPP).
He has consistently emphasized the need for Africa to develop its path to progress. He believes relying on foreign aid and assistance hinders the continent’s growth and self-sufficiency. “Africa has, at its most fundamental, a leadership problem,” Moghalu stated in a recent interview.
“Leadership is the single most powerful determinant of social and economic progress. Without competent, conceptually sound, practically rigorous, and disciplined leadership, Africa cannot develop systems that work,” he added.
