Erling Haaland inspired a Manchester City comeback from 1-0 down to beat Chelsea 3-1, moving into the Premier League top-four, outpacing Chelsea on Saturday.

Lineups

City started with Ederson in goal, Matheus Nunes and Josko Gvardiol in defence, Abdukodir Khusanov making his debut, Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt making his debut, Ilkay Gundogan, Kevin De Bruyne, and Phil Foden in midfield, and Haaland holding the front line.

Chelsea’s lineup included Robert Sanchez in goal, Marc Cucurella, Trevoh Chalobah, Levi Colwill, and Reece James in defence, Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo in midfield, with Noni Madueke, Cole Palmer, Nicolas Jackson, and Jadon Sancho leading the attack.

How the Match Unfolded

City recovered from a nightmare start as debutant Khusanov gifted the visitors the opening goal. Noni Madueke scored after Khusanov’s failed header. Josko Gvardiol levelled for Guardiola’s men before Haaland showed his blend of strength and skill, chipping in 22 minutes from time.

Haaland then turned provider for the in-form Phil Foden for City’s fourth win in five league games. Chelsea managed just one win in their last seven Premier League games, falling to sixth.

Guardiola’s decision to start new signings Khusanov and Marmoush initially backfired. However, Marmoush found his footing, almost scoring on debut.

Gvardiol’s equalizer came after Sanchez saved Matheus Nunes’ run and shot. Haaland outmuscled Trevoh Chalobah and chipped Sanchez, who was caught out of position. Foden wrapped up the win with a composed finish after a clever flick from Haaland.

Post-Match Analysis

The defeat reveals Chelsea’s defensive lapses and goalkeeper issues. Guardiola’s tactical adjustments paid off for City, particularly with Khusanov’s substitution for John Stones. Haaland was in form and his goal and assist and his overall impact on the game proved it. Chelsea’s lack of finishing and defensive solidity has been a consistent problem.

What the Coaches Said

Pep Guardiola: “Erling was magnificent. His presence and quality made a huge difference, and he truly inspired the team to fight back.
Mauricio Pochettino: “We need to learn from our mistakes and improve. Our performance wasn’t up to par, and we got punished for it.

Player of the Match

Erling Haaland won the Player of the Match award with a rating of 8.7 points. His brilliant chip goal and assist for Phil Foden were helped secure City’s victory.
