Mrs Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, has returned to Nigeria after being released from a UK prison. She arrived on Tuesday. Beatrice had been sentenced to five years in the UK.
Friends and family have been reported gathering at her family home in the Mpu community of Aninri Local Government Area, Enugu State.
Beatrice was released after serving part of her sentence for her involvement in an organ harvesting case. She, her husband, and Dr. Obinna Obeta were convicted in the UK in 2023 for conspiring to exploit a young Nigerian boy for organ harvesting.
The boy was allegedly lured to the UK under false pretences to donate an organ for the couple’s ailing daughter, Sophia.
While Ike Ekweremadu received a 10-year prison sentence, Beatrice was sentenced to six years.
Her early release has reignited the home of the return of her husband, the former Deputy Senate President. Many have expressed solidarity with the Ekweremadu family and offered prayers for their eventual release.
The case remains one of the most high-profile legal battles involving a Nigerian politician in recent history.
A formal public statement from the family is still being awaited.
