Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador (Mrs) Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, believes President Bola Tinubu will soon release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
During a memorial event in Owerri for her late husband, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, Bianca remarked that “President Tinubu understands the importance of Kanu’s release.” She argued that freeing Kanu would help identify criminals who exploit his detention to commit violent acts in the Southeast.
She emphasized the significance of Kanu’s release, claiming it would “expose the masqueraders behind the violence.” Bianca also promised to “do whatever it takes to ensure His Excellency grants this request.”
The Minister addressed the theme “Unifying the Igbo Race” and called for an end to the region’s ongoing violence. “The Igbo people are not known for harming their own,” she said, urging unity to reclaim the region from crime and insecurity. “Our people face existential threats, and we must act to restore peace,” she asserted.
Bianca lamented the current state of the Southeast, saying, “Communities are empty. Our illustrious sons and daughters have fled.” She noted that kidnappings for ransom have increased and, “This is not what Dim Ojukwu fought for.”
Bianca also condemned the illegal “Sit-At-Home” orders enforced by faceless militia in the region, saying it contradicts the self-determination efforts and harms local economies. “Ndigbo are enterprising and their brother’s keepers,” she said.
Her remarks join the growing demands for Kanu’s release as a step towards restoring security and unity in the Southeast.
