The Nigerian Senate has passed a resolution to remove Yakubu Danladi Umar from his position as Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, as stipulated in Section 157 (1) of the 1999 Constitution.
The resolution passed in plenary on Wednesday November 20, had the backing of 74 senators, exceeding the two-thirds majority required by the constitution.
President Bola Tinubu is expected to then carry out the Senate’s decision by relieving him from office in accordance with the law.
Previously, President Tinubu had appointed Mr. Abdullahi Usman Bello to succeed Umar due to a series of “overwhelming allegations” against him. Allegations that include corruption charges by the anti-graft agencies, EFCC and ICPC. There was also an incident involving a physical altercation with security personnel in the FCT.
However, Umar reportedly refused to relinquish his position to his designated successor, prompting the Senate to pass the resolution to comply with the law to its full extent.
