Ondo State voters head to the polls on Saturday, November 16, in a gubernatorial election that is seen mainly as between Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Agboola Ajayi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Both men have deep political ties in the state from their service under the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu. Ajayi was Akeredolu’s deputy in his first term as governor and was later replaced by Mr. Aiyedatiwa. Aiyedatiwa succeeded the late governor upon his demise earlier this year.

The election is seen as a two-horse race marked by intense campaigning and controversy. The governor is campaigning for continuity after stepping into Akeredatiwa’s position, while Ajayi’s campaign theme is Change. The rivalry of the two political heavyweights has split the elite’s power architecture into two blocs.

Excitement and anticipation are high, but apprehension is also growing among residents and political observers. However, there have been no reports of lethal violence as of now.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Nigeria Police Force are under pressure to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful election. INEC has promised that every vote will count, with Commissioner Oluwatoyin Babalola pledging impartiality. Preparations include distributing ballot papers to all local government areas is currently underway.

Security is a major concern, but police plans to deploy officers to every polling unit, supported by other agencies. DIG Sylvester Alabi emphasized the importance of intelligence gathering to prevent election-related fraud and violence.

At least 17 political parties are contesting. All 17 candidates have signed a peace accord in Akure. INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu urged politicians to respect the electorate’s decisions.

With the eyes of the nation on Ondo, voters have the chance to decide who will govern for the next four years, with hopes for a peaceful and credible election.
