The Zenith Labour Party won 15 of the 17 Local Government Areas in Abia State during the November 2 elections, while the Young People’s Party (YPP) won in the other two LGAs.
Prof. George Chima, the chairman of the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission, announced the results at the commission’s office in Umuahia, the state capital, on Saturday.
“We have fulfilled the responsibilities we were entrusted with on September 5. It was a challenging endeavor, but we went above and beyond to promote awareness about the election throughout the state,” Chima remarked.
The chief electoral officer observed that this was the first time more than 12 political parties contested in an LGA election and described Saturday’s poll as “free, fair, and credible.”
“This alone marks a significant achievement for the commission. We accomplished a task that typically takes six to twelve months in just two months,” Prof Chima remarked.
The election was conducted in 4062 polling units in Abia state. It was largely peaceful, with no reported casualties throughout the state.
The commission chair congratulated both the victors and losers, saying, “The paramount issue is that Abia remains peaceful. I encourage everyone to preserve this peace.”
Although Governor Alex Otti is of the Labour Party, the preponderance of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) winners lends to speculation that the governor made a strategic decision to use the ZLP to sponsor his political loyalists while the LP is still embroiled in a leadership crisis at the national level.
