US 2024 Election: Harris Delivers Harshest Critique of Trump in Her Last Speech of the Campaign

With just one week until the US 2024 election, Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday urged Americans to “turn the page” from Donald Trump, labeling the ex-president as “unstable” and “obsessed with revenge.”

Speaking at the Ellipse, near the White House on Tuesday, October 29, Harris reminded the crowd of Trump’s actions just years prior when approximately 75,000 Trump supporters breached the Capitol in protest of the federal election results.

Harris declared, “Americans died as a result of that attack. One hundred and forty law enforcement officers were injured … while Donald Trump sat in the White House watching as the violence unfolded on television.” She recounted how, upon learning that the “mob” wanted to harm his vice president, Trump merely responded, “So what?”

“This is not a candidate for president who is thinking about how to make your life better,” Harris asserted. She alleged that Trump is “consumed with grievance” and would use power to punish perceived enemies while rewarding allies if he returned to the White House. “He has an Enemies List of people he intends to prosecute,” she added, warning that one of his priorities would be to release violent extremists who attacked law enforcement on January 6.

Trump campaign have disputed all those allegation as hubris, and have Harris herself has been unable to provide any evidence to her claims.

Harris also called attention to Trump’s rhetoric around dissent, stating he “intends to use the United States military against American citizens who simply disagree with him,” branding them as “the enemy within.”

Harris’s speech was pitched as her “closing argument” for the election, challenging voters to reject nearly a decade of divisive politics that she claims began with Trump’s first campaign in June 2015. She maintained that Trump “never understood” democracy, clarifying, “We don’t shy away from robust debate … someone who disagrees with us does not make them the enemy within.”

Asking Americans to unify, she said, “America, for too long, we have been consumed with too much division, chaos and mutual distrust, and it doesn’t have to be this way.” Harris called for a stop to the “drama and the conflict,” advocating for “a new generation of leadership” and expressing her readiness to lead as President.

In the address, Harris presented herself as “someone who has spent most of my career outside of Washington, DC.” She stressed her long-standing fight against powerful interests, recounting battles against financial institutions that exploited homeowners and predatory practices affecting vulnerable communities.

Referencing her middle-class background, she shared that her mother instilled in her “a drive to hold accountable those who use their wealth or power to take advantage of other people.” Concluding her remarks, Harris asserted, “That’s the kind of president I will be.”

The US election takes place on November 5. At least 50.5 million Americans have reportedly cast their ballots in early voting by mail or in person in states where those are allowed.

Several opinion polls released on Tuesday continue to show both candidates tied at 49% each – a recipe for a repeat of the 2019 election result dispute.
