Popular Ogene Musician ‘Igbo Jah’ Shot Dead in Enugu by a Nigerian Police Officer; Protest Erupt

Tragedy struck in Enugu on Saturday morning as famous Ogene musician Okezie Chikezie Mba, known as “Igbo Jah,” was cut down in his prime from a shot fired by a Nigerian Police Force operative attached to the anti-cult unit.

This incident occurred barely two weeks after another fatal shooting by police officers along the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway.

The Enugu State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that the police officer involved has been arrested and detained. According to Command spokesman Daniel Ndukwe, the Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, has ordered a full-scale investigation.

“The musician was reportedly leaving the Squad’s Headquarters after a friendly visit when, for reasons yet to be ascertained, the police officer fired his rifle, hitting the victim,” Ndukwe said. “He was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead.”

Commissioner Uzuegbu described the incident as “unacceptable” and assured that the police officer and anyone else found culpable will be sanctioned.

Governor Orders Investigation

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State also released a statement, calling the incident “unfortunate” and a “huge loss to Ndigbo,” describing the late Okezie Mba as “one of the Enugu and Igbo talents” who popularized Igbo culture through Ogene music.

“I have directed a thorough investigation into the matter to ensure justice for him, his family, and fans.” Governor Mbah said, offering “heartfelt condolences to his family and fans.”

Residents responded by protests near the police headquarters, but police deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd.

The killing of this cultural icon has caused much anxiety and brings back to the burner the question of police brutality and accountability, particularly in the South East.

As people await the investigations, many are left wondering if the killing was deliberate. Regardless, the loss of Igbo Jah is a big blow to the Igbo music community and lovers of Igbo music and culture worldwide.
