How The Match Unfolded
Madrid struggled to display their usual attacking flair and nearly paid the price as Williot Swedberg missed two chances for Celta, one of which was saved by Thibaut Courtois. However, Kylian Mbappe produced a brilliant moment, giving Madrid the lead in the 20th minute with his eighth goal of the season across all competitions. The away side maintained their 1-0 lead until halftime.
Celta Vigo equalized when Miguenza played a one-two with Bamba before crossing for Williot Swedberg, who finally converted. After Bellingham set him up, Mbappe had another chance to restore Madrid’s lead, but Manquillo blocked his effort.
Real Madrid eventually regained the lead when Luka Modric’s pass found Vinicius Jr., who slotted it into the net. At 39 years old, Modric became the oldest player to play for Madrid and the oldest to get an assist. Celta Vigo almost equalized during extra time, but Gonzalez’s effort went wide after losing his marker.
Even with their victory, Real Madrid’s performance still leaves much to be desired. Carlo Ancelotti was frustrated with his team’s lack of cohesion and intensity, especially in midfield. They were also vulnerable in their defense, which allowed Celta multiple chances. Thibaut Courtois made a crucial save to deny Swedberg, while the backline, including Eder Militao and Aurelien Tchouameni, faced challenges.

The win keeps Real Madrid in second place on the La Liga table, level on points with Barcelona, who have a game in hand. Celta Vigo remains 10th.
Real Madrid is currently second with 24 points, Barcelona leads with 24 points and a game in hand, and Celta Vigo is 10th with 13 points.
