Nigeria-Egypt AFCON Match Referee Suspended After Officiating Error

The Tunisian Football Federation has suspended referee Haitham Guirat indefinitely after a major officiating error in a domestic league match.

Mr Guirat served as the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) during Nigeria’s third‑place match against Egypt, which the Super Eagles won on penalties.

The decision was announced on Monday, with the referees’ committee describing the incident as a “serious refereeing mistake” that required immediate disciplinary action to protect the integrity of the league.

Although the federation did not disclose full details of the error, the call sparked widespread criticism and raised concerns about officiating standards in Tunisian football.

Guirat’s suspension has reignited debate about his performances at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

His role in that tournament had already drawn mixed reviews, and the latest controversy has intensified scrutiny of his officiating record.

The federation confirmed that Guirat’s suspension does not carry a defined timeframe. He will undergo further assessment and review before any consideration is given to his possible return to officiating duties.

The move underscores Tunisia’s effort to uphold refereeing standards and restore confidence in domestic football.
