This marked his 10th international hat trick, putting him level with Cristiano Ronaldo for the most hat tricks in men’s international football.
The match unfolded, with Messi kicking off the proceedings for Argentina after capitalizing on a defensive error to score in the 19th minute.
He then set up the second goal, with Julian Alvarez playing a through ball to him, allowing Messi to square it to Lautaro Martinez to make it 2-0.
Messi and Alvarez were at it again as Messi spotted Alvarez’s run into the box and timed a cross perfectly for the striker to slot it calmly into the net.
The second half saw Argentina dominate once again, with Nicolas Otamendi’s headed goal being canceled by VAR following an offside by Tagliafico in the build-up.
The fourth goal came following a team effort. Nahuel Molina’s run was spotted by Leandro Paredes, who then crossed the ball, which was claimed by Thiago Almada, who struck it first time to score.
Messi scored his third goal after the keeper failed to parry the ball away, completing his hat trick with a curling effort into the bottom left corner of the net.
