The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won 15 out of 17 local government chairmanship positions in Thursday’s local election in Jos. The Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC), led by the Chief Returning Officer and Commission Chairman, Daniel Cishak, officially announced this during a press briefing in Jos.
Cishak confirmed that the PDP candidates emerged victorious in local councils such as Barkin Ladi, Mikang, Shendam, Bassa, Riyom, Jos South, Jos East, Kanam, Qua’an Pan, Langtang South, Jos North, Mangu, Wase, Bokkos, and Kanke. However, results from the remaining two councils—Pankshin and Langtang North—are yet to be declared due to delays in the collation process.
“The elections were conducted peacefully across the 17 local government areas, and the turnout was impressive,” said Cishak.
The victorious candidates were almost immediately presented with their certificates of return at a ceremony held at the PLASIEC office in Jos.
The elections were keenly contested, with 11 political parties participating. However, the PDP’s dominance was not limited to chairmanship positions. The PDP secured an overwhelming victory in the councillorship elections, winning 222 out of the 237 seats declared across the 16 councils so far. The All Progressives Congress (APC) trailed with 14 seats, while the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) managed to secure only one.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang had earlier declared a public holiday on Wednesday to encourage voter turnout. The holiday was extended to Thursday to ensure the smooth conclusion of the election process, particularly in the remaining local government areas where results are yet to be finalized.
Only the results from Pankshin and Langtang North are still awaited.
