The Federal High Court in Abuja has declared Julius Abure as the substantive National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), validating the March 2024 Nnewi Convention that produced the party’s national leadership.

Justice Emeka Nwite ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize Abure as the legitimate chairman, overriding INEC’s earlier stance that Abure’s leadership was invalid.

In reaction to the court judgment, Abure called on the party’s former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to “help unite the party”.

There is no question that the party will need restructuring and healing, but I assure you that our doors are open to all”, Abure said.

The party boss added that the victory is not just his, but a victory for justice and democracy, confirming that the rule of law prevails and the party’s leadership remains legitimate. “This judgment marks the beginning of a new era for the Labour Party in Nigeria.

In the coming days, we will focus on rebuilding our structures, reconnecting with our grassroots, and uniting our members. We will heal old wounds and emerge stronger than ever before.

With the collective efforts of all members, we will continue to fight for the interests of the common man and the betterment of Nigeria“, he said.

Abure offered forgiveness to those who attempted to undermine the party, and engaged in character assassination, and blackmail, but emphasized that forgiveness must be accompanied by repentance and restitution. He expressed his hope that those involved would reflect on their mistakes, come forward with a repentant heart, and reconcile themselves with the party.

This judgment is a major development, especially considering that elders and stakeholders of the party, including the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), had recently set up a Mrs Nenadi Usman-led Caretaker Committee to oversee the party in the interim and prepare it for a national convention.

However, the caretaker committee has yet to comment on this development. It’s worth noting that there is still room for appeals to a higher court, which could potentially alter the current situation.
