Nigeria’s Works Minister, Dave Umahi, has announced that the Federal Government will toll all major roads in the country upon completion of construction and renovation.
The intention of the tolling, he explained, is to “bring a lot of money to the Federal Government.”
In addition, the tolling will make the roads safer with a “10-minute response time” in case of emergencies. Most tolling points in Nigeria have security checkpoints attached.
The minister emphasized that the tolling of these roads will not only bring confidence in their use but also ensure that people can travel at night with security measures such as permanent solar lighting.
He explained that private sector members have been engaged to fund the construction of these roads, and the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission and the Ministry of Works will work together to implement a “paperless payment mode.”
Some of the initial roads to be tolled upon completion are the Keffi-Makurdi Road, Lagos-Ibadan, Makurdi to 9th Mile in Enugu State, and the Second Niger Bridge.
The Minister said road developments had not been handled as investments before the administration of President Bola Tinubu, who is now managing road developments more professionally.
He added that the present administration inherited a total of 300 damaged roads and bridges. More road constructions will commence from October 1, 2024, across the six geopolitical zones of the country.
