President Bola Tinubu will not attend the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session in New York later this month, opting instead to focus on pressing domestic issues, including the devastating floods.

The President has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the high-level global event.

According to a statement from Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s decision comes shortly after his return from trips to China and the United Kingdom.

Vice President Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s national statement to the General Assembly and participate in important sideline events and bilateral meetings.

The UNGA 79 General Debate is themed, “Leaving no one behind: Acting Together for the Advancement of Peace, Sustainable Development, and Human Dignity for Present and Future Generations,” and will run from September 24 to September 28, 2024.
