Heartland FC has announced the passing of Coach Christian Power Obi, who tragically died on Friday, August 23, 2024, following a road accident while traveling to Abakaliki, Ebonyi State. The accident occurred as the team was en route to participate in the TICO/SELECT Ifeanyi Ekwueme Preseason Tournament. The vehicle carrying Coach Obi collided with a parked truck while attempting to avoid an oncoming vehicle, leading to injuries and, ultimately, his untimely death.
Despite efforts by medical personnel at a nearby hospital in Okwelle, Imo State, Coach Obi passed away due to the injuries sustained. Heartland FC has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Coach Obi, who was instrumental in the club’s success, including their unbeaten run in the 2022-23 Nigeria National League season.
The club has asked for privacy and will not issue any more statements during this difficult time. Coach Obi’s remains have been taken to the Federal University Teaching Hospital (FUTH) in Owerri, where injured players are also receiving care.
No funeral arrangements have been announced.
