Nigeria will face Gabon, while Cameroon take on the Democratic Republic of Congo in the African World Cup playoff semi-finals next month, according to the latest fifa.com/fifa-world-ranking/men">FIFA rankings released on Friday.
The four teams earned their places as the best runners-up from the nine qualifying groups, setting up a high-stakes showdown that could see Africa gain an additional slot at the 2026 World Cup.
Under FIFA’s playoff format, the highest-ranked African team is paired with the lowest-ranked, while the second and third-ranked sides face off.
Nigeria, ranked 41st in the world, will thus meet 77th-ranked Gabon, while Cameroon (54th) will play DR Congo (60th).
Tough Path to the World Cup
The semi-final ties are scheduled for November 13, with the winners advancing to a playoff final three days later.
The ultimate victors will then compete in the intercontinental playoff tournament in March 2026, where two final World Cup spots will be up for grabs.
