Nigeria to Face Gabon in 2026 World Cup Qualifier Playoff

Nigeria will face Gabon, while Cameroon take on the Democratic Republic of Congo in the African World Cup playoff semi-finals next month, according to the latest FIFA rankings released on Friday.

The four teams earned their places as the best runners-up from the nine qualifying groups, setting up a high-stakes showdown that could see Africa gain an additional slot at the 2026 World Cup.

Under FIFA’s playoff format, the highest-ranked African team is paired with the lowest-ranked, while the second and third-ranked sides face off.

Nigeria, ranked 41st in the world, will thus meet 77th-ranked Gabon, while Cameroon (54th) will play DR Congo (60th).

Tough Path to the World Cup

The semi-final ties are scheduled for November 13, with the winners advancing to a playoff final three days later.

The ultimate victors will then compete in the intercontinental playoff tournament in March 2026, where two final World Cup spots will be up for grabs.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup — jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States — will feature an expanded format, offering Africa a greater chance to increase its representation.

Morocco will host the African playoff rounds, though specific match venues are yet to be announced.

The North African nation, which famously reached the semi-finals in Qatar 2022, continues to strengthen its influence in continental football.

With Nigeria, Cameroon, DR Congo, and Gabon all chasing the same dream, the playoff is shaping up to be one of the fiercest battles yet in African qualification. Will Nigeria’s Super Eagles finally return to the global stage, or will Gabon pull off an upset?
