The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has issued a warning to the public on the River Niger’s rising water levels that may start on August 22, 2024. Authorities say it could peak towards early September.
The warning follows a report released by the Niger Basin Authority in Niamey, Niger Republic, which indicate that upstream activities in Niger and Mali is causing the rising water levels.
NIHSA Director-General, Umar Mohammed, said on Friday, “Flood waters from these two countries are expected to move gradually into Nigeria through Kebbi State.“
Mohammed additionally disclosed that the operators of the dams at Kainji and Jebba on the Niger River has been notified and are preparing to handle the situation.
“It is important to note that as of August 22, 2024, the dams are not spilling water from their reservoirs yet,” he added.
States and communities along the River Niger system have been advised by NIHSA to be on high alert due to the anticipation of flood waters as they are expected to peak towards the end of August and into September.
NIHSA promised to monitor the nation’s flood situation and provide timely updates to the public.
