On Thursday, August 8, Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah launched an initiative to boost foot production and support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) across the state.

Support for Farmers

Under the program, about 12,000 small-holder farmers will receive one bag of fertilizer each as part of the initiative. Additionally, 51 power tillers, valued at N2 million each, will be distributed to farming clusters in Enugu.

Moreover, 1,251 beneficiaries across all 17 local government areas will gain access to vital agricultural inputs, including rice and bean seedlings, cassava stems, organic fertilizers, and herbicides.

Empowering MSMEs

The state government also allocated N1 billion to support MSMEs, with 80% of the funds targeted explicitly at women-owned businesses. This support includes N60,000 grants for over 16,000 nano-enterprises.

In addition, the government will distribute N400,000 to 187 beneficiaries, provide N7.5 million each to 10 tech startups, and offer operational grants for solar equipment to 256 beneficiaries. The initiative also equips 269 recipients with laptops, POS terminals, and other essential tools.

Sanitation and Water Provision

Furthermore, Governor Mbah announced a new initiative to eliminate open defecation across the state. This program includes an N15 million investment in water and sanitation facilities for 135 communities, encompassing the construction of boreholes, toilet facilities, and power generators in key areas like town halls, markets, and schools.

Economic Growth

Governor Mbah urged the beneficiaries to “use these resources wisely, creating jobs, sparking a revolution in agriculture, and boosting our state’s economy“.

The Enugu State government’s commitment to agro-industrialization and MSME development continues to be a cornerstone of its economic transformation strategy.
