Nigeria’s government has issued a travel advisory to Nigerian travelers and residents in the United Kingdom to stay “extra vigilant” due to an increased risk of violence following a deadly school attack in Southport, England over the weekend.
The attack, which resulted in the deaths of three children and injured eight others, was triggered by misinformation alleging the attacker was an immigrant and a radical Islamist.
This false narrative fueled anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim sentiment, further intensifying the demonstrations.
In the advisory, the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Eche Abu-Obe, described the situation as having reached “dangerous proportions,” noting that the murder of the children had sparked an anti-immigration narrative, particularly targeting Muslim immigrants and people of color.
The statement included specific safety recommendations for Nigerian citizens in the UK, including avoiding participation in political processions, protests, rallies, or marches and avoiding crowded areas and large gatherings.
