MultiChoice Nigeria, the operator of the popular pay cable TV subscription platforms DSTv and GOTv, has filed an appeal against the ruling of Nigeria’s Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal.
In a landmark judgment reported by JolibaLive News! on June 7, the tribunal fined the company a hefty N150 million and ordered it to give all its consumers a one-month free subscription.
Barrister Festus Onifade, a customer of MultiChoice, took the initiative to bring the case to the tribunal, citing unfair price hikes in the cable TV company’s subscription rates.
Onifade, who filed the motion to the tribunal and sued both Multichoice and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), claimed that Multichoice failed to issue a one-month notice before their recent fee increases.
The tribunal’s ruling, which favored Barr. Onifade has restrained MultiChoice from implementing its planned price hike. Customers may still have to wait until the conclusion of the appeal before knowing if they will enjoy the free one-month subscription.
The development could potentially alter the company’s future business strategies.
