Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists who only recently killed fifteen fishermen in the Tumbun Rogo hamlet are now back threatening the entire community in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno state to leave, or die.
Kukawa LGA is close to Lake Chad, one of Africa’s largest bodies of water, which connects Nigeria, Cameroon and Chad, home to the Multinational Joint Task Force.
The information about the terrorist threat came from a resident who left Kukawa to Maiduguri.
Speaking under pseudonymity, the resident described how the terrorists gathered residents of different towns early on Thursday morning and gave them orders to either vacate their houses by Saturday or face extinction.
Panic struck the villagers after the terrorists’ threat, forcing many to flee, some to Monguno and others to Kross Kauwa.
Gov. Babagana Zulum resettled most of the communities in the area, including Kross Kauwa, Baga, Doron-Baga, the Kukawa village, and Tumbun Rogo, which had come under persistent attacks during the height of Boko Haram insurgency.
But even with some degree of normalcy and tranquility, terrorists from Boko Haram and ISWAP have been attacking the area. The terrorists continue to rely heavily on Kukawa’s socioeconomic significance, especially its agricultural and fishing operations, which they use to their advantage for both survival and financial gain.
The latest threats and attacks highlight the area’s vulnerability to these outlaws and the need for stronger presence of state security measures.
