The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) is getting ready to probe the secrets of the universe using the world’s most powerful particle accelerator.
This massive machine called the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), will go into action on April 8, during the expected April solar eclipse. The idea is to attempt to understand the mysteries of invisible matter that is thought to shape our universe.
The LHC is housed 300 feet underground at the border between France and Switzerland and has been instrumental in unlocking the secrets of particle physics. By colliding protons at incredibly high speeds it tried to unravel the fundamental building blocks of matter and how they interact.
Scientists at CERN are most interested in examining the so called dark matter – a mysterious substance that constitutes a sizable portion of the universe’s mass but has eluded direct detection. They hope that if they can recreate the conditions of those moments after the Big Bang, they may be able to better shed light on the nature of dark matter and its role in the existence of the universe.
The experiment involves accelerating protons along a 17-mile-long tunnel and then colliding them head-on. At that speed, scientists think, dark matter is revealed and offers them a glimpse into the invisible forces that govern this world.



Although exciting, scientists worry about the immense challenges ahead. Ensuring the smooth operation of the LHC requires careful planning and execution to avoid dangerous, uncontrollable fallouts.
Nonetheless, they say they’re optimistic and hope for the best.
From understanding dark matter to groundbreaking theories like the Higgs field proposed by Professor Higgs in 1964, the LHC holds the key to unlocking deeper insights into the fabric of our universe.
