Labour Unions Insist On Nationwide Strike Next Week Protesting Brutalization Of NLC President In Owerri

Nigeria’s labour unions comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have made good their threat to go on strike nationwide protesting the manhandling and brutalization of the NLC president Joe Ajaero at his home state of Imo.

All workers in the federation are to downtool from Tuesday November 14, 2023 according to the decision reached Tuesday 7 November at an extraordinary meeting of the  National Executive Council of both bodies called to discuss the situation.

The Labour unions fingered the Imo state government and the state police command for the brutalization of their boss. Mr. Ajaero was in Owerri to help mobilize state workers who in turn were trying to protest over the non-payment of workers salaries by the Imo State Government.

A hysterical governor, faced with a hotly contested re-election on Saturday 11 November may have read political motives in the state workers strike and mobilization by Mr. Ajaero and then proceeded to break up the protest.

Gov. Hope Uzodinma however denies any involvement and blamed the attack on Ajaero on mob action but also accused the NLC president of meddling in the local politics of the state.

Last Friday, the organised labour handed the Federal Government a five-day ultimatum to replace the State Police Commissioner Mr Mohammed Barde and arrest and prosecute all those directly involved in the violence against their boss.

Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on Sunday, announced the redeployment of Mr Barde from Imo State for “neutrality sake” ahead of the Saturday November 11 polls, but an angry and dissatisfied union insists on showing their angst by deciding to proceed on the strike next week.
