Deputy Gov’s Alleged Perjury Could Threaten Sanwo-Olu’s Seat As Governor Of Lagos State

A U.S. immigration lawyer has told the Lagos State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal and provided documentary evidence to allege that Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat took an oath of allegiance to become a United States citizen.

Olubusayo Fasidi is testifying on behalf of Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, Labour Party governorship candidate in Lagos who is challenging the victory of his All Progressive Congress opponent in the March election.

Mr Fasidi was led in evidence by Vivour’s counsel, Olumide Ayeni.

Fasidi claimed Hamzat applied for naturalisation as a US citizen as contained in forms 8CFR/337 and N400 and that he subsequently renounced his Nigerian citizenship sometime in 2002.

Nigeria’s laws forbid a president or governor of a state to have dual allegiance. If this is proven, it could lead to the disqualification of Mr Hamzat, and according to the precedence of Supreme Court rulings, will also mean the disqualification of his boss Sanwo-Olu since they both share a “joint ticket“.
