A new theory has suggested the Great Pyramid of Giza may have been designed to preserve mathematical and astronomical knowledge through its dimensions and proportions.
Independent researcher Sefy Levy argues, in a paper titled “The Pyramid as Memory Hypothesis” published in August, that measurements taken from the pyramid’s height, base, sloping sides and overall shape may form a numerical system linked to lunar cycles, planetary movements and calendar tracking. The paper has not yet been peer reviewed.
Levy says the pyramid’s dimensions may have been chosen deliberately, to preserve knowledge in a form built to outlast its builders.
“The pyramid was not built to last forever because it contained something valuable… it was because it was something valuable,” he wrote, describing the structure as "the knowledge… made stone.“
What The Numbers Are Said To Show
According to the paper, Levy reached his figures by dividing key pyramid measurements using fractions known to have been used by ancient Egyptians.
One calculation produces 27.5, which he says is close to the roughly 27.55-day cycle linked to the Moon’s closest approach to Earth.
Another figure, 70, is interpreted by Levy as a possible reference to the interval between the heliacal setting and rising of Sirius, the brightest star visible from Earth.
He argues that further calculations produce numbers resembling the repeating cycles of Venus and Jupiter, and that the pyramid’s proportions generate values close to mathematical constants including pi and the golden ratio.
These interpretations remain part of Levy’s hypothesis and have not been established as evidence of the builders’ original intentions.
His wider theory also draws on ancient Egyptian creation accounts tied to the city of Heliopolis, in which the world is described as beginning with a dark, boundless body of water called Nun, from which a sacred mound known as the benben emerged. The creator god Atum, in this account, brought himself into being from that mound.
Levy proposes the pyramids may represent that primordial mound.
He also floats a separate possibility: that the pyramid’s shape drew on a landscape linked to the distant ancestors of the ancient Egyptians, which he identifies as the Eye of the Sahara, a geological formation in Mauritania.
An Alleged Ancestral Link To The Sahara
Levy’s theory suggests communities may once have lived near the Eye of the Sahara before changing environmental conditions reduced water sources, pushing them east toward the Nile.
He argues later generations could have built the pyramids partly as a memorial to that ancestral homeland — a claim that, like the rest of his numerical argument, has not undergone independent scientific review.
The hypothesis joins several recent attempts to explain both the symbolism and construction of the Great Pyramid, also known as the Pyramid of Khufu.
Separate research published earlier this year, reported by outlets including Live Science, proposed that the pyramid was built using a multi-channel ramp system built into its edges, with workers using a spiral ramp that was progressively covered as new layers were added.
Levy’s claims about encoded astronomical and mathematical knowledge remain speculative pending further scrutiny and formal peer review.
