A fire outbreak has gutted parts of the popular Oranyan Market in Ibadan, Oyo State, destroying goods, shops and other property belonging to traders.
The blaze reportedly started at about 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 23, 2026, according to residents and traders in the area.
Videos and photographs shared online showed thick smoke and flames rising from sections of the market as firefighters and other first responders moved in to contain the fire.
The extent of the destruction was still unclear, but the images showed several structures and goods already destroyed by the time the fire was brought under control.
One social media user, Prime, described the incident as painful and posted a video with the caption, “Omoh! This is terrible.”
Another post by Oyo Mandate Circle said the fire began around 10:30 p.m. and shared footage from the scene.
What Traders Faced
The fire reportedly forced residents and traders to alert emergency responders as the flames spread through parts of the market.
By Monday morning, more images had surfaced online showing burnt sections, damaged stalls and goods destroyed by the blaze.
The cause of the fire had not yet been established at the time of filing this report.
There were also no official figures on the number of shops affected, the value of goods lost or whether anyone was injured.
Oranyan Market is one of the busy commercial centres in Ibadan, and the fire has again drawn attention to the risk of outbreaks in crowded markets.
Such markets often contain highly flammable goods, tight walkways and crowded shops, which can allow fire to spread quickly once it starts.
The incident adds to concerns about fire safety in major trading centres across Nigeria.

This is disheartening, a lot of traders had their livelihoods stocked up in their shops, and who will reimburse them? Being petty cash earners they wouldn’t have got insurance on them, chai may the Lord see them through especially during these trying times.
